Caring for Sterling Silver Jewelry

How to care for your Sterling Silver Jewelry

To avoid tarnishing, small cloth pouches may be used to protect a silver bracelet, along with a small zip lock bag or a separate compartment in a jewelry box. When cleaning your silver bracelet, never follow the myth of using toothpaste, for it contains small abrasive granules the scratch the silver bracelet. Silver in sterling silver bracelet reacts to sulfur and sulfides. Never allow your silver bracelet to come in contact with egg yolks for it will react to the sulfur dioxide. Another chemical to be wary of when cleaning your sterling silver bracelet is chlorine. Always remove your silver bracelet before entering a pool for it will tarnish black over time.

January Birthstone

Birthstone for January is Garnet.

Garnet, the January birthstone, derived its name from the Latin word granatus, meaning like a grain, which refers to the mode of occurrence wherein crystals resemble grains or seeds embedded in the matrix.  Garnet displays the greatest variety of color of any mineral, occurring in every color except blue. For example, deep red (Pyrope meaning "fire-eyed") vibrant green (Tsavorites), other colors  including purple, red, orange, yellow, green, brown, black, or colorless.

The use of garnets as a gem or gemstone can be traced to prehistoric times, where Jewelry made with garnet has been found as early as the Bronze Age (3000 BC) in burial sites. It is thought that early communities valued garnet and believed that it offered protections in the afterlife. Currently, the world's largest supply of garnets is the continent of Africa.

Legends, Myths and Healing Properties:

Garnet is a stone of romantic love and passion.  It signifies eternal friendship and trust. It is said to bring positive thoughts and boosts energy, and be excellent for manifestation. It can also assist mystically with success in one's career and building one's self-confidence.
